This is the first time I look on your web page and I must say I'm impressed by the diversity of info contained therein. Keep up the good work and I really missed the oldtime columnists like Doroy Valencia, Joe Guevarra and Max Soliven; Jeremias Montemayor, Hilarion Henares, Jr; Louie Beltran, and others. Just where are they now? Are they all deceased or living in quiet retirement? God bless our Country and the Manila Times. Mabuhay!

Unang una, gusto ko kayong pasalamatan para sa kay ganda na website na ito. Tapos gusto ko rin pasahin sa inyo itong email na kakakuha ko lang po. Maraming Salamat! Dear Friends We are asking for your support to send Mike Gabbard to Congress. Mike Gabbard has a special place in his heart for Filipinos. Mike understands our problems and shares our values because he has Filipino family. VETERANS We need to send Mike Gabbard to Congress so he can fight for Filipino Veterans. Brave Filipinos have always stood side by side with US forces, fighting and dying alongside American soldiers in World War Two, Korea and Vietnam. Mike will fight to achieve the long over-due benefits promised to our Filipino veterans. Mike knows first-hand the sacrifices made by the veterans and those who serve in our military. He was raised in a military family. His father felt privileged to serve in the U.S. Air Force for 25 years. As your representative in Congress, Mike will fight for Filipino veterans to be recognized as US veterans with all the entitlements and benefits for them and their families. IMMIGRATION Mike’s family has been directly affected by Immigration policies which discriminate against Filipinos. Mike’s oldest daughter is State Representative Tulsi Gabbard Tamayo. Tulsi’s husband Eduardo is a Philippine national, son of Philippine Air Force Col. Antonio Tamayo Jr. and grandson of Philippine Air Force General Antonio Tamayo—a WWII veteran who survived the Bataan “Death March”. He is also the nephew of former Laoag City Mayor Ernesto Tamayo. Shortly after the terrorist attack of 9/11, Tulsi joined the Army National Guard. Tulsi has now volunteered to risk her life in Iraq with her fellow soldiers of Hawaii’s 29th Brigade. It was so sad that Tulsi’s family in the Philippines could not even get tourist visas to come see Tulsi before she leaves. This kind of anti-Filipino discrimination is heart-breaking. Yet it happens every day. Mike Gabbard will fight to stop immigration policies that discriminate against Filipinos. OUR VALUES Mike Gabbard shares our traditional, spiritual and moral values. Mike is one of the most visible and effective legislative advocates and grassroots community leaders in Hawai'i. In 1998, Mike lead the historic battle to protect traditional marriage. 70% of the people voted in support of traditional marriage and against same-sex marriage. But Mike’s opponent Ed Case believes “same-sex couples should be allowed to marry” (Hawaii Tribune Herald 3/5/04). In his own words, Case says, “My own personal, moral, spiritual, and religious beliefs don’t oppose same-gender marriage.” (Letter to a Constituent 2004) That’s why Case also voted against the Marriage Protection Amendment. (HJR #106, 9/30/04) Case said: “I oppose a constitutional amendment against gay marriage.” (Hawaii Island Journal, 4/1/04) Ed Case believes our children should be taught in school that homosexual relationships and behavior are normal and natural. Cays says, “I believe that the fact and the reality of homosexuality and heterosexuality and of opposite and same-gender unions should be taught in our public schools without a value judgment system also being offered.” (Case letter to constituent, 2004) Mike also opposes partial-birth abortion. Ed Case voted for “partial-birth abortion” …. twice! (HR760, 6/4/03; S3, 10/2/03) Case is against requiring parental approval before a teenager can obtain an abortion. Case doesn’t even want parents notified before their teenage daughter can get an abortion. (Kauai public forum, 2004) FIGHTING THE DRUG PROBLEM Mike has worked statewide to help combat drugs. Working with communities around the state, Mike is determined to solve the devastating "ice" problem. Mike has brought together families, elders, unions, law enforcement, churches, and community organizations to try to solve the problem. The State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers (SHOPO) endorses Mike Gabbard for Congress. FILIPINO LEADERS ENDORSE MIKE “Mike Gabbard has a proven track record of making us understand exactly what the right choices are. He faces the facts and fights for our interests.” - Dr Arnold R. Villafuerte, health advocate and well-known community leader. “Personally I like Mike because he is a fighter and he’ll stand up for what’s best for the Filipino Community.” – Norma Barroga, President, Maui Filipino Community OUR CHANCE This is our chance to elect to Congress a representative who truly understands our problems and is determined to solve them. Mike Gabbard is an effective leader who shares our values and will fight for us. Please support our friend Mike Gabbard. Please vote for Mike Gabbard on November 2nd, and support Mike by sharing this with as many Filipino friends and family members as possible. Filipino Friends of Mike P.S. To learn more about Mike and what he stands for, and his position on all the issues in depth, please visit http://www.mikegabbard.com . It’s really a beautiful and informative website!

THE WONDERS OF BAYBAY “GRAY SAND” BEACH While most vacationers, picnickers and beach strollers prefer it white, a silent few and those who believe that there is something wonderful imbedded in it, choose gray sand beach of Baybay in Roxas City, as a better alternative over the clear looks and the picturesque view of Boracay, the latter of which is approximately 85 road kilometers away from this city. The fact that this sparkling gray sand could absorb heat and maintain it until sunset to keep the beach water warm in the night, makes night swimming a healthy experience and soon a hard habit to break. At sunrise, scores of early morning joggers stop by to take a deep breath, do stretching and dive in its calm waters. Others walk a mile; take their cup of coffee while feeling the heat of the sand on barefoot. Another group would bury themselves in the sand with their families or trusted caregivers helping out digging and seeing that the sand covers at least 60% of their body while the heat is yet tolerable. As if some therapeutic wonders would unfold, these frequent beach hangers swore they gain back their health sooner than expected after some ailments struck them and render them helpless. Those who suffered paralysis in their body due to stroke said that the heat of the sand made recovery in a short span of time. Those with skin disorders like unwanted calluses in the soles of their feet, blackheads on the face, black armpits or elbows simply rid of it by rubbing sand and dive. Others preferred it rinsing with the bubbles of beach water coming from the gushing waves or man-made bubbles done by massive flapping of the hands in the beach water. Those who are not aware of the wonders of such rituals are unmindful of the people doing their thing at the beach, while those who have good experience are now spreading the news and are bringing their friends and relatives, particularly those afflicted with certain disorders, to Baybay Beach to take part in the healing properties of the gray sand. Though there is no scientific evidence or written facts to prove that there are indeed some truth on the said healing or therapeutic claims, local folks said that there is really nothing to lose but something to gain if one has faith on such belief. To think that gray sand beaches are not as popular as the white sand, Capizeños are lucky enough to have such wonders within its locality. Many local folks anticipate that in the near future, the gray sand beach of Baybay will become too famous that people living elsewhere will come, take a dip, lie on its shores, bury themselves or simply bathe with sand and rinse in the bubbly waters, thereby overshadowing its seafood image. Soon enough, tourists will flock to Roxas City not just to taste its seafood but to partake the healing therapeutic wonders of Baybay Beach located in the northern tip portion of Panay Island, Western Visayas, Philippines.(Alger O. Inocencio/city tourism)

Hi, Today is the first time that I look for a radio station from the Philippines and found you guys. I just want you Guy's to know that the Live Radio station in Cebu makes me feel that I am back in Cebu. Though it sounds more from the States because they all speak English. It still makes me smile. it's been 14 yrs. now that I am residing in the States and almost 7 yrs. haven't been in Cebu. I am a 29 yrs. old girl... I miss Cebu so much!!! I guess I am afraid to go home because of the pain that I will feel when I come back in the states. So thank You for this Site. and last, I just notice that you got a banner for the military people. My Fiance is a Marine and currently deployed. Thank You for that support too. gimingaw na ko kaayo diha!!! hahaha Thank You very much!!! God Bless

Dear Filipino Brothers in the USA : Thanks for the God - given pioneering spirit of the founders of this website. It gives me a sense of belonging though I am here in the Philippines. But because of my past frequent travels to USA, it is easy for me to have the feel of what it means to live in the USA. Just like you I have considered the USA as a second home. I hope to help someday to further your mission of reaching out to our brothers and sisters in our country in case you need someone in the Philippines to help you "gratis".God speed your blessings for His glory.....Mario

You have a great website with many links. Unfortunately I am here to look for information on NOEL (wife Arlene) AMBROSIO, last of Diamond Bar,CA who has given the local Pinoy a bad name. I recently had an unfortunate meeting with him then discovered he has been mistreating people for years but to do so to his own race is despicable. Though a growing community we Asians are a small group and to have to work together. To have the name of a fine group torn apart by one individual is unexcusable. Any information will be appreciated by myself and others.

Marikina City, Metro Manila Philippines - Mon Mar 15 21:28:33 2004

finally! i have found the website that would connect us to all our kababayans in the entire planet. thank you filipino.com! my name is Toinette and i presently work with ASIN, the Philippines' pioneering ethno-folk-rock band since 1978, with present members LOLITA CARBON and PENDONG ABAN, JR. ASIN has recently celebrated the 25th year anniversary of the release of their first album which included their signature hit song, "Masdan Mo Ang Kapaligiran" together with "Itanong Mo Sa Mga Bata" and "Ang Bayan Kong Sinilangan (Timog Cotabato)" among others. one of asin's hit songs "BALITA", a composition of the late Cesar 'Saro' Bañares, is now being played all over the world through black eyed pea's "The Apl Song". a song that depicts one's roots... the Filipino roots. after the release of ASIN's latest album called "Pag-ibig, Pagbabago, Pagpapatuloy" in 2001, Lolita, Pendong and a new set of session musicians have been performing in all parts of the Philippines and once again, the Filipino people are offered with songs that reflect the true Pinoy sentiments and values. some people say ASIN is now part of our tradition because their songs have endured even in the most challenging times of our country's recent history as well as that of the band's. as a friend and a true-blue fan, i am hoping that they would be able to play for our countrymen residing outside the Philippines before they finally retire maybe 5-10 years from now. i wish that we could help revive the true Filipino spirit by allowing them a chance to play for our fellow kababayans whether they are OFWs/ migrants/citizens of another country now. let us promote original Filipino music and patronize the true artists of our country, those who compose the kind of music that truly reflects peace advocacy and love of one's country. mabuhay ang filipino.com sa pag-uugnay ninyo sa ating mga kababayan sa lahat ng bahagi ng mundo! ipamahagi ang himig ng pag-ibig at kapayapaan para sa ating lahat... mula sa ASIN toinette projectace2003@yahoo.com

Pinoy nurse, "great article". Thanks for sharing. I'm just one the million fellow filipinos who came to Canada with just a dollar in his pockets. Thank you Canada for your generousity and for giving us a better place to work and live, make money to support our family, relatives and friends back in the Philippines. With hard work and perserverance I managed to find a job in a bank saved money and was able to sponsor my nanay, tatay, 5 bro & 2 sis with the help of my younger sister that was also a caregiver here in BC at that time. OVERSEAS FILIPINOS BRANDED "SELLOUT" In a March 4, 2004 article, Inq7.net (website of Philippine Inquirer and GMA7), called a Filipino nurse "sellout" for wanting to work abroad. Read the full article here: http://www.inq7.net/opi/2004/mar/04/opi_editorial-1.htm =================================== A RESPONSE TO THE ABOVE ARTICLE To the INQ7 editorial staff who unthinkingly and unfeelingly wrote "Sellout": We resent your calling a Filipino who chooses to stake out his own future in a foreign land a "sellout". How easy it is for you to say that, you in your comfortable chair in your comfortable office cubicle! Have you ever gone to a foreign land to work as an entry-level employee, struggling upwards against an oh-so-subtle but ever-present current of discrimination as a "second-class citizen"? Have you ever worked 12 long hours on your feet, answering to the needs and demands of multilingual, multicultural patients, only to come home to have to cook your own meals, do your own laundry, throw your own trash before you throw your tired, aching body to bed and wake up 5 or 6 hours later to put in another long day at work? Have you ever fought fatigue, loneliness, homesickness, and despair all at once, and then have to present a brave voice to the people back home: "Yes, Mama, I'm all right here. The pay is good, Papa. Opo, I will send $300 on my next payday so you can go to the doctor to have your heart checked and buy your medicines. Ingat po kayo". And then burst to tears when you put down the phone, the loneliness gripping your heart so tight you almost can't breath, wishing you were back home, but a ticket back will cost another $900...better to send it home so that your parents can pay for the doctor, your pamangkins can go to school, your aging lolo can buy his medicine. Inq7 editorial staff, have YOU ever done that? No, perhaps you with your "katulongs" at home, surrounded by parents who pamper you (whom you mostly take for granted), with your own secret sense ofarrogance (yes - arrogance!) that you work in a major newspaper and are better than the masa and middle-class lot who have to FIND work abroad - you have never been in our shoes and you will not understand the battles we fought to get here, stay alive here. You do not understand, do not even TRY, and that is why you judge us. You - with your overworked maids, your university education, your comfortable 15-30 paycheck, your big-shot arrogance - you are hypocrites. Do you think this person you are judging, or others like him, have not fought to stay in our country, if only we saw that staying would assure us of a good future for ourselves and our families? Do you really ignorantly believe that just because a person is young and smart, that his life is "unencumbered by challenges", as you put it so euphemistically? Do you not know that our parents sacrified and scraped together their own meager salaries to send us to school, only to find us, after graduation, working for years in measly-paying jobs in hospitals, getting paid as little as P3,000 a month, barely enough to cover our "pamasahe" to and from work? Do you really think millions of unemployed or underemployed hungry young doctors and nurses languishing in poverty will be good for the country's economy and future? When there was a glut in our professions and the local hospitals turned us away or asked us to work as "volunteers" (walang bayad!), do you think we sat on our behinds and waited for someone to give us handouts? NO! We pounded the pavements applying for work as hotel clerks, salespeople, telemarketers, anything, so we can put food in our stomach and clothes on our backs and maybe give a little something to our parents and siblings. And when we finally landed a non-medical job, we had to repeatedly answer questions like "O, nurse/doctor ka pala, bakit dito ka nagtatrabaho? Anong ginagawa mo dito?" But we bore that in silence, in humility even, because the alternative - inertia, despair, poverty - were unacceptable to us. But perhaps you do not understand this either, as you most probably got your job straight out of university, using your familys' connections. And have YOU ever volunteered on medical missions, unpaid but willing and ABLE, like many of us have before we left the country? Most likely not, because it is easier to judge and write about it, than actually DO SOMETHING GOOD. And yet, now, are you with one side of your doble-kara going to judge and condemn us, brand us "sellouts", and with the other side praise us and thank us for sending $7 BILLION ANNUALLY back home in remittances? And, may I point out that as you write that haughty, arrogant editorial, even the very ADS in your website TARGET the very people whom you so arrogantly dismiss as "sellouts". Hoy, mga IGNORANTENG HIPOKRITO dyan sa Inq7, mahiya naman kayo! You have deeply, deeply insulted us overseas Filipinos by branding someone who wants to work abroad a "sellout". But despite this, we will continue working, continue fighting, continue sending money home so that our families can have better lives, and our children, siblings, and even relatives to the nth degree can have better educations and better futures. Someday we hope to come back home to our beloved Philippines, to start businesses, open schools, create jobs for our fellow Filipinos - all with our hard-earned, hard-fought dollars/euros/dinars. Even then, we will continue to shore up the economy of our country, fight for its future the best we can. We wonder if, in your comfortable room in your comfortable house, when you look inside your judgmental soul (if you ever do!), you can say that for yourselves. Think about that. Even when our country has not been very good to us we still help our families back home. Even when our own countrymen, kababayan kuno, call us "sellouts", we still send our hard-earned dollars to families who appreciate us. Even when you insult us we still try to find out what is going on in the Philippines (see, we read Inq7, ABS-CBN.COM, and Philstar.com and we watch The Filipino Channel and we know what you're yammering about when you think we're not looking) and see how we can help OUR country somehow, by helping our families. If and when our government gets its act together and gives us a reason to come back, then you might see us come back in droves. We will bring back our intelligence, our street-smarts, our special kind of diligence and perseverance hammered and honed in the jobmarket battlefields of other countries. We will continue to work, in silence for the most part, to improve our lives, assure our family's future, and hopefully help improve our country's economy. But we will not suffer foolish, ignorant hypocrites like you in silence. =================================== PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO OTHER CONCERNED OVERSEAS FILIPINOS, AND LET US MAKE INQ7.NET AWARE THAT WE DO NOT APPRECIATE THIS INSULT AND WE WILL NOT LET IT PASS.

19th February, 2004 We are a trade publication company showcasing products and services found in the Philippines. MEET THE PHILIPPINE ENTERPRISE Ours is a romantic country. Although we have become a complex society of over a hundred subcultures and dialects, not to mention the adoption of numerous foreign cultures— most absorbed of which are the Spanish, Chinese and American—yet, in the heart of the Filipino is a love song that resonates when one looks at the mountains, lakes, wonders, traits, quirks and charm that the Philippines possesses that breeds unique products in literature, arts and livelihood. If we looked at our country through the right perspective, we will realize that there are many special things to love and to take pride in, simply because we cannot find them anywhere else in the world. There indeed is no place like home. I will be most grateful if you can mention us to the Filipino community there. I made it my resolve just recently to market Philippine-made products to filipino-americans like you as you definitely afford it and that its cost will not hurt your pocket knowing that its cost is 55 times lesser using U.S. dollars and that you at the same time help our economy back home can you do me a favor by informing me who among the filipinos out there will interested in buying this idea? It's product at your money worth and at the same time you are helping a filipino back home for every purchase you'll be making. It costs $65. plus freight. Thank you. Don't be mislead by my english. "The Politics Of Violence" By Sunny Rasheed Lucman Pacasum....... The recent elections gave us an indigent insight into the complex character of our people. These past events have become another one of the motivating reasons for Filipinos to live anywhere else but on this country. Their main argument is that the bleakness of the political landscape will eventually kill whatever chances we have for improving ourselves as a people. But can anyone blame us? Look at our situation. Investors are starting to move away. Leaving our economy hopelessly indebted. Our politics has lost its dignity and turned into a circus. We are the only country where Mexican soap opera stars are received like royalty in the Presidential Palace. There are lesser and lesser job opportunities for Filipinos and one of the few more lucrative occupations involves talking to foreigners on the phone with a false accent. How miserable Filipinos must be! A cousin of mine bluntly retorted that I should be making only constructive and positive suggestions, instead of destructive and negative ones. But there is nothing positive about affirming what is nakedly wrong and incorrect. And there is nothing destructive about remembering the sins of the past. There is nothing negative about criticizing the diseases of the present. What this country needs is something I am sceptical any of our leaders have the balls to offer - the courage to face the truth. If only Filipinos were more objective and politically mature, things would be different. Our mindset is focused on ourselves to utter disregard of others and the truth. It has never changed. In the elections, whoever loses claims to have been cheated. I can’t blame them because if they won, they would have been the cheaters we love to gossip about instead of devoting time reading good literature such as success stories. It gets even worse! Crab mentality in the Philippines is so blatant that during every election everyone tries to put one down. Even most of the media people who have a hand in molding the people’s opinion cannot even do what they are supposed to do and that is to report these events without pre-judgment. They could say whatever they want to say against Muslims and only a few people would challenge them because there is no organized way to challenge stereotypes and bias in the media. What is also obvious is the widespread bias of Filipinos, which are their love for Americans and their hatred for Muslims. The media has to understand that we Muslims are mutually sympathetic to one another. When I hear troubling news about any of our Muslim brothers and sisters, I am instinctively sympathetic to them. I may know little about the problem he/she is facing, but I cannot and should not suppress my natural sympathy. This love is born out of the bond of brotherhood, which the Islamic religion is keeping to establish among its followers. Everyone in our generation dreams of being rich, successful and happy, but the dreams require us to hop on a plane and become domestic helpers. In short, we think that being a Filipino is a liability because this nation does nothing to help the youth. It’s depressing that our leaders think that only people who are 18 and above should be served well because their political careers depend on their votes. What our leaders should understand is that the opinion of everyone matters even if those opinions won’t necessarily translate into votes. I’m sick and tired of hearing statements that seek to convince that the Philippines is a good country. The truth is it’s not! It’s far from good. That’s why staying in the Philippines has simply become intolerable. Clear examples to justify my stand are the leaders who claim that the Philippines is one of Asia’s growing economies. As far as I know, we have been a growing economy ever since Martial law. I never heard anywhere or at any point that the Philippines had already grown to a strong economy. How can the government make me believe that our economy is getting better when I constantly see Sampaguita girls carrying babies and risking their lives just to beg for coins in the streets? Is that how they picture a growing economy? This country is poor! Very poor! Our minimum wage earners can hardly get enough food and shelter. Our national debt has reached trillions of pesos and God knows when we will be able to pay for it. I have come to a conclusion that the Philippines is a country of beggars. Begging is no longer taboo. Decency is no longer a practice. Our people’s change of character is the direct result of the educational system. Education in the Philippines is mediocre. In my province, I have seen students cross a river in a banca, walk in muddy roads and flooded streams to reach their classes in school buildings with broken roofs, classrooms with no blackboards and tables with no chairs. One can hardly study let alone learn in such an economically-challenged atmosphere. The Department of Education should look into this outrageous problem that mocks the constitutional obligation of the state to provide free quality education to all children, including Muslims. Our leaders say that we should be proud because we are run by a democracy. Clearly the voting public and the candidates feed on each other to create an incestuous relation of the rule of the corrupt and the corruptible. In the past few elections, only the elite have successfully influenced the outcome of our election. Worse, even drug lords and loan sharks have also found a way to use their dirty money to win polls. This brand of politics is destroying the image of the Bangsamoro, making us dirty and corrupt. Something is wrong with a people who instead of putting a drunkard into therapy, we send him to Malacañang. Something is very wrong with a people who instead of throwing a coup leader behind bars, we send him to senate. Something is obviously wrong with a people who instead of holding grafters, tax evaders and rapist to account for their sins against society, we send a number of them to Congress. This country is run by corruption, not democracy. And yes, we’re even proud of it. The military is tasked with the burden of protecting its citizens. But for such a strong organization, it is very alarming and upsetting to see that it is the most vulnerable entity to political pressure. This vulnerability can be traced to the military’s utter ignorance of the constitution, it’s role in defending it, and it’s ignorance that the dishonest and greedy generals capitalize upon. The Bangsamoro people continue to suffer the agony of war waged by the government troops against our mujahideens. Thousands of my Muslim brothers have left their homes and livelihood due to these hostilities. The truth should come out that the military is the one provoking us to fight in order to justify and raise government funding for its war against terror. Have you noticed the standard of living in Mindanao is low compared with that of Visayas and Luzon? Government records attest that Mindanao only gets 10% of the national budget. Considering it’s the second largest island and provides most of the country’s resources. If there are any investments coming in, places like Cagayan de Oro, Iligan City and other non-Muslim dominated provinces are enjoying them except for the Bangsamoro people. The truth is the government regularly manipulates population statistics to minimize the Muslim count since only Christian birth and death records are recognized as official. There is no accurate census available on the current number of the Bangsamoro population. Thus voter representation in Muslim Mindanao and the need for government infrastructure in our province is denied. The government is responsible for steering this nation. Without that responsibility, the government has no purpose and would have no right to exist. This country needs to be told the plain truth that this country is doomed and should work towards a miraculous cure. This government must take heart and at least have pity on the poor of this nation, especially the Bangsamoro who has no ambition but to be free. Free from this wretched country. WASSALAM!....... "KEEP THE FLAME BURNING" By Sunny Rasheed Lucman Pacasum...... Malacanang seems to be under the impression that military operation is the only solution in solving the Bangsamoro problem. I’m not surprised that they didn’t even consider its repercussions on the Muslim civilians living in the areas of conflict. The whole issue is under discussion. We, Muslims, must find a better way to protect ourselves. Most of the civilians who live in the houses destroyed by the military are Muslim civilians that have nothing to do with the MILF. Incursions that often leave Muslim civilians dead or wounded, with their homes in ruins, constitute the military’s excessive use of force. These incursions serve as a collective punishment meant to cripple the Bangsamoro quest for independence in Mindanao. I simply reject what the military is doing; it is destroying our lives, our dreams, and our future. Memories of my stay in Bayang and Baloi still haunt me. Most of the houses I stayed in had bullet holes on their walls. Ancestral homes were burned and many properties were damaged. I remember crying all night after hearing horrible stories about military abuses during the Martial Law up to the present. I asked myself what crime have we committed except the ambition to see ourselves free? This was probably the lowest point of my life. That night surely changed my views in life. Memories of Martial Law and the Marcos Regime in Muslim Mindanao are still fresh in the minds of every Muslim. These were among the tragic events in the history of the Bangsamoro people and to our family. Martial Law fueled so much anger and frustration among the Filipino Muslims. And its injustices gave birth to the founding of the Islamic resistance movement, led by my grandfather Sultan Haroun Al-Rashid Lucman, Gen. Salipada Pendatun, and Datu Udtog Matalam. They fought against the Japanese occupation armed with almost nothing but courage during their younger years. They pledged their fortune, their lives and their sacred honor against the Marcos Regime. ***** Most Mujahideens hate the government, and I don’t blame them. With the neglect and the corruption they infuse to our people, the government has done nothing to us but fill up their bellies for their personal interests. These crimes are causing so much hate triggering our emotions to push ourselves to sacrifice our lives, families and our future in the jungles of Mindanao, defending the honor of the Bangsamoro. Mujahideens are the real heroes of today. Fighting for our cause, our beliefs and aspirations, they have proven their sincerity more than enough. I’m a personal fan of Commander Bravo who is still fighting the abusive military armed with his beliefs and the shield of his convictions. He continues to inspire me to stay committed to the Bangsamoro struggle. If our Mujahideen brothers decide to leave the struggle I will not blame them. But I don’t think they will. As a Muslim we should be fighting for our historical rights and survival. It is the very symbol of our existence as the true people of Mindanao. The government can never change our customs and traditions. They can never succeed in bringing us to an understanding and appreciation of their Christian methods. The rule of Shariah must prevail in the Muslim provinces. The concept of the separation of Church and State in the Philippine constitution does not apply to Islamic communities in Muslim Mindanao. Temptation in my view is something to be eradicated from this world by rules. Not something to resist thru personal discipline. That’s why I go for an Islamic state because in such a state there would be no x-rated movies, prostitution, drugs, stealing or cheating. Rules would have to be stringent so that people would be afraid to violate them. All the women will be dressed in such a proper Islamic way. Nobody will commit sin and society will be perfect. If you remove temptation, there will be no sin. Our Mujahideens have shown the military first hand why the Bangsamoro fighters are the most feared in the tropics of Mindanao. Our Mujahideen brothers have mastered the art of guerilla warfare and are in one spirit and deed to defend Islam and our Motherland to fight for independence. The military should know that as long as they inhibit our lands and attempt to abuse our innocent Muslim brothers, our Mujahideens will always assault them. The military is asking for it. I’d like to point out however that Islam doesn’t like aggression committed either by Muslims or non-Muslims, whether done by individuals or states. Islam prohibits Muslims to declare war against peaceful non-Muslim neighbors! But Islam urges its adherents to go to war only in self-defense and especially when they are driven out of their homeland! Islam doesn’t allow Muslims to initiate war and aggression, but makes waging war a duty in the case of self-defense or restoring our land. The Qur’an states the rules of war as follows: 1) one should not kill women, children, the elderly, armless civilians; and 2) one should not kill, torture and humiliate captives. These were the orders of the Prophet Muhammad to Mujahideens 1400 years ago, long before the so-called Geneva Treaty was implemented. Islam abides by the principle of mercy even in time of war. At present, the government has been poor in preventing the limit of damage in the Mujahideen conflict. The recent wave of bombings in Manila and Davao are merely preliminaries. The government can’t do anything about it. As time progresses, our economy will suffer more and more. Mujahideens claim that the military has destroyed thousand of Muslim houses and killed a thousand more innocent civilians in countless raids into camps since the uprising broke out way back during the Martial Law era. The lousy military would say that our Mujahideen brothers continue to use Muslim civilian houses to serve as camouflage for tunnels used to smuggle weapons in from nearby camps, and stage attacks on military positions. What I’m trying to point out is that the military solution to the Mindanao conflict will never work. The solution to the Mindanao problem lies in our rich history, geography and culture - and not through the barrel of a gun. The military will never win against us. My sole purpose is to preserve, protect and defend the Bangsamoro nation and Islam. ***** Most young Muslims in Manila and Visayas - if not all - are ignorant about their history. They may know much about Filipino history but lack the basic knowledge of what transformed the Bangsamoro history into what it is now. I had the opportunity to talk to some of them. And most of them are indifferent about our religion and culture. I mean why worry about the Bangsamoro problem when there are more salient matters to think about such as what will happen next in Meteor Garden? However I have also met some young Maranaos with brilliant minds. I believe that the future of the Bangsamoro struggle will depend on the kind of education our youth will be getting. We should equip ourselves with quality education. I continue to hope that the education our brothers and sisters get from public schools will make them strong enough to eventually break the crippling bonds of poverty. My parents decided to send me to an exclusive school like La Salle because they believe that a private education is the best legacy they could give me. Considering the stiff competition these days, one can’t help but notice companies requiring applicants from exclusive schools like La Salle. Only when children are sent to private schools or to specialized government schools like MSU will parents be assured of their children’s competitive edge upon graduation. But students studying in public schools like UP and MSU also have advantages. From them I learned the value of resourcefulness, perseverance and hard work. These qualities enable me to measure up and be competitive with products of private schools. How I wish our politicians will expand our poor Muslim brothers and sisters’ access to basic education and reverse the declining quality of our public school system. It isn’t possible for the children in Bayang, one of the remotest municipalities in Lanao del Sur, to read anything after sunset. How in the world can you concentrate doing your homework under a dim kerosene lamp? I bet if they were given electric facilities it will improve their performance in school. There are talks that the government is planning to build makeshift classrooms for schools in remote areas like Lanao, but we all know it’s all talk. ***** I remember when I was in kindergarten in UP Diliman Learning Center, a kid in school would always go up to me and ask me why I didn’t have a tail on my back? I guess people in Manila had the impression that Muslims were monkeys or something. But that question bothered me a lot during my younger years. It bothered me so much that I had to ask my Uncle if it was true that Muslims do grow tails. The last thing I remember was that my Uncle forced me to beat the hell out of that kid. And that was just the start of it. When I transferred to La Salle, I always got into fistfights every time a schoolmate would shout out “boy Muslim” or “boy Moro.” And there were only four Muslim students in La Salle during my stay there from grade 1 to 4th year high school. I was only in grade 7 when my grandmother, Princess Tarhata Alonto Lucman, explained to me that I should be proud when called a “Moro” because the Spaniards, Japanese and Americans never conquered us. There were times that I felt so proud of my Bangsamoro blood that I would refuse to stand up during flag ceremony simply because the Philippines was named in honor of Philip II of Spain. I never felt I was Filipino. And now with our corrupt politicians, mafia policemen, hoodlum judges, massive unemployment, poverty, and our ever-popular military, who wants to be a Filipino? I have always been pessimistic about the fate of the Filipinos. But I remember one time I gave in to the nationalistic spirit during high school and college years when I was influenced by La Salle’s thrust of molding us to an image of a true “gentleman” with a Filipino heart. It was the only point in my life that I was proud to be Filipino. But thanks to this government’s all-out war policy, I have come to my senses. I started to see things in a clearer perspective when I transferred to MSU. I witnessed how military abuses took place and how deprived Muslim provinces are compared to neighboring provinces. It’s really frustrating to see how this government could treat us like second-class citizens. I bet you’ve witnessed the never-ending checkpoints in Muslim areas here in Mindanao. And you know what’s funny? Malacanang wouldn’t permit the military to set up real checkpoints in NPA-infested areas in Luzon and Visayas. Malacanang has become the symbol of everything that is bad in a Filipino. When will the government be sincere in its provisions of public service? No solution to this country’s problems is ever permanent! The government is always cramming for temporary measures and is incapable of handling even the simplest misfortune. It is the responsibility of the government to protect the entire nation. But it seems the government is always short of solutions. We have problems with coordination, red tape, and infighting. Politicking more often than not derails the potent capacities of these solutions to permanently safeguard the public. The government should stop making those costly disaster policies and provide real solutions to the Mindanao problem. The real disasters come when public service takes the backseat for politics. Thanks to the government’s stand for an all-out war policy, I got back my pessimism. Now more than ever I’m firmly convinced that the Bangsamoro can never co-exist with this government. A clear example to justify my stand is the government’s announcement that Mindanao is the country’s food basket. Yet why is it they continue to declare an all-out war policy against us? To give you a bird’s- eye view, government records show that 14 of the 21 poorest provinces in this country are in Muslim Mindanao. All the Muslim-dominated ARMM provinces belong to the top 5 poorest. The government should also stop insulting our intelligence when they claim that our economy is growing because of the increase in our gross domestic product. Let me ask you readers if there is real economic growth in this country? I challenge any politician and economic expert to answer that before our Muslim brothers who suffer in poverty. Common sense tells us that there is economic growth when there is food on the table and jobs for those willing to work. My point is that the real situation of our economy is pitiable. This government should fix it first before saying it’s improving. The government should also stop bragging about the Americans giving us “aid” because their “aid” is actually tantamount to a “loan.” Our government should learn the vocabulary of American imperialism. Its officials should take a crash course on economics 101 to inform them that there is no such thing as free lunch. The government should stop forcing us to see things their way. It must give us all the leeway necessary to use our imagination in search for answers. They must govern with truth and without deceit. It should comply with its promises to the Bangsamoro. It should adapt to our culture and growing needs. The government cannot blame us for being wary because we haven’t seen a concrete demonstration of its sincerity other than empty promises of peace and development. The Bangsamoro has contributed so much for the greatness of this country. Mindanao is the land of the Bangsamoro - a fact attested by historians around the world. I don’t care what my critics will say. This is our land and we want independence. The government ought to know by now that their all-out war stand will never work. It’s just a matter of time when the government will realize that it cannot eliminate a rebellion fueled by passion and the Qur’an’s inspiration that claims dying for a holy cause is the birthright and the destiny of all the believers of the Almighty Allah. The Bangsamoro will get freedom by all means necessary. I have no doubt that someday our people and this government will put an end to the Mindanao conflict and both parties will commit to an agreement that will not fall short of the aspiration of every Moro - our own Islamic state. Inshallah, the Mujahideens’ ideological conviction for the establishment of a Bangsamoro homeland and an independent Islamic state in Mindanao will not be far. The challenges that we are facing today will only be met and overcome if each of us will realize that the fate of one is the fate of all. WASSALAM! Sunny Rasheed 23, is an economics graduate of MSU. He plans to join politics some day.
